Progression, leading disability specialists and Human Resource Development consulting firm, recently announced the formation of its new Assessment Centre - a project which aims to empower inclusion and accessibility for all people with disabilities.
The Assessment Centre, a collaboration between Progression and a body of experienced professionals, disability specialists and registered Occupational Therapists, aims to offer organisations and individuals the opportunity to fully participate in an inclusive and accessible workplace.
The initiative aims to offer some of Progression’s existing disability-related products and services to a wider audience. “Where previously Progression has focused on offering disability solutions to corporate South Africa in line with requirements of Employment Equity Legislation and the B-BBEE Codes of Good Practice, various services will now be available to Occupational Therapists, Medico Legal Attorneys, individuals with disabilities, insurance companies, employers as well as other disability specialists,” states Tarryn Mason, General Manager at Progression.
Assessment services offered will include ergonomic and functional assessments which aim to evaluate an individual’s functional capacity in relation to the requirements of a job, as well as the design of workstations that facilitate optimal contribution and participation.
Reasonable accommodation assessments will establish requirements for an individual by suggesting modifications to a job or environment in order to reduce the impact of the disability on performance.
Audits will also be available for organisations who wish to determine the number of people with disabilities working within the business, or who wish to assess the accessibility of their work environment. Both these processes facilitate the implementation of policy requirements, communication campaigns, as well as recommendations for improvement in order to better manage an accessible workplace.
Disability Awareness & Sensitisation Training, which is a key driver of integration and inclusion, is also offered, engaging with employees, employers and people with disabilities to facilitate a better understanding and response to disability in the work environment.
Zarina Bulbulia, co-founder and Skills Development Manager at Progression, who will be heading up the team of inclusion experts and disability specialists who will run the Assessment Centre from Progression’s offices, highlights the benefits of this centralised project, “Not only will the Assessment Centre aim to promote existing disability solutions offered by Progression, but as we develop relationships with industry experts, we in turn hope to further expand on the disability solutions offered by the centre”.
All of the services offered will be available as stand-alone support services, or form part of an integrated inclusive workplace strategy. “Positioning our services through the Assessment Centre allows organisations already implementing an inclusive workplace strategy to access the necessary support from relevant disability specialists during implementation. We have noticed the increasing demand for a ‘support-style’ approach as organisations are becoming better geared to manage disability within their workplaces,” comments Zarina
Aligning to the Best Practice approach of people management within the workplace, the focus of the centre will remain on the individual in relation to the working environment. “We want to empower individuals as we focus on ability. We believe that inclusive and accessible workplaces are key drivers to unlocking skills and potential within the workplace,” concludes Zarina.
