Learner Success Story
Congratulations to Itumeleng Tshoke who recently went from learner to permanent employee at our client, a global medical technology company. Effective 1 August 2022, Itumeleng was appointed as a Junior Financial Accountant.
Itumeleng joined the company in October 2021 as a learner on an Accounting Technician learnership and was placed in the Accounts Receivable role where he was responsible for collections from debtors. He has previously completed a Diploma in Accounting as well as an Advanced Diploma in Financial Markets and was also placed on a Yes4youth internship in June 2020 at a leading financial administration company.
Starting his learnership at month end, the busiest period for the Finance Department, posed a challenge to Itumeleng as the rest of the team had very little time to help him settle in and explain what needed to be done. However, always being up for a challenge, he saw it as a learning opportunity and pushed himself to step up and not give up. “My passion for the field of Finance and the support from my seniors kept me going,” he explains.
The learnership has exposed him to different systems and the mentorship he received has helped him to simplify processes, manage his time and complete tasks before their due dates. “I have become more confident in myself and I’ve also learned how to support the rest of the team, where we guide each other,” he says. He goes on to explain, “A learnership is a great start to a career, it’s a platform to engage with the working world.”
Itumeleng feels he was offered a permanent job because he showed a lot of interest in the company and worked hard to deliver quality work during his learnership. “I showed up every single day at work and arrived early to prepare for the day. I listened and never stopped learning; my role didn’t just end at Accounts Receivable. I allowed myself to learn other components as well,” he confirms.
His advice to other learners is, “Keep going, give your best and remember that no question is a stupid question! And don’t take networking for granted, you never know who may be interested in your work and be able to help you in your career.”
Well done, Itumeleng! We are so proud of you and wish you all the best in your new job!
